PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Kia ora koutou,
It has been a busy and positive start to Term 4, with plenty of opportunities for our tamariki to learn, challenge themselves and celebrate success. From Ag Day to camp, these experiences remind us how fortunate we are to have a school community that gives so generously of its time and support.
Growing our writing practice
On Tuesday, our teachers took part in writing professional learning with Emma Nanha from Sound Foundations for Literacy, exploring the CSPACE approach and different techniques to support our young writers. Emma was an inspiring presenter who challenged our thinking and provided valuable insight into our next steps. This learning will help us strengthen a consistent, whole-school approach to writing, building our teachers’ practice and supporting students to develop confidence and skill as writers.
Ag Day – the heart of our school community
Our successful Ag Day was a wonderful celebration of the rural traditions and community spirit that make Kio Kio School special. Preparing and caring for an animal takes commitment, patience and perseverance, and our students had every reason to feel proud of their efforts.
A huge thank you to Emma Telfer for organising the event, and to the many helpers, judges and whānau who contributed to its success. Events like this sit at the heart of our school community, bringing people together and creating lasting memories for our children.
Congratulations also to all our tamariki who represented Kio Kio School at Group Day on Friday. Despite the very hot conditions, they showed fantastic perseverance, confidence and pride, achieving some excellent results. A special congratulations to Finley Mora, who won Supreme Champion Calf, and his sister Freya Mora, who won Supreme Champion Lamb! These are outstanding achievements, and we are very proud of you both. Thank you to the whānau who supported our competitors throughout the day.
Welcoming Nina Mitchison
I am delighted to share that we have appointed Nina Mitchison to our teaching team for 2027. Nina grew up in a small town in Golden Bay, at the top of the South Island, and feels a strong connection to rural communities. She enjoys keeping fit and spending time outdoors. We look forward to welcoming Nina to our school whānau as she begins her teaching career at Kio Kio School next year.
Pōhutukawa’s Pirongia adventure
Our Pōhutukawa students enjoyed an exciting camp in Pirongia, with opportunities to try new activities, build independence and encourage one another. From the zip line and rock wall to archery and mountain biking, there were plenty of challenges to tackle. Skits and team activities also provided opportunities for laughter, teamwork and strengthening friendships.
A huge thank you to the parents who gave their time and energy to help make camp possible. Your practical support and encouragement make such a difference. A special mihi nui to Miss Beck for the care and organisation that went into creating this memorable experience for our tamariki.
Gala Night preparations
Our Supporters Committee is busy planning our upcoming Gala Night. We are very grateful for the enthusiasm and work happening behind the scenes to bring our community together for another special school event. Please keep an eye out for further details and opportunities to lend a hand—every contribution helps!
Athletics Day – Wednesday 4 November
Our school Athletics Day is coming up on Wednesday 4th November. We look forward to seeing our students giving their best, trying different events and encouraging their classmates. Please pop the date in your calendar. It is always lovely to have whānau alongside us to support and celebrate our tamariki.
Our value focus – Respect
This term, our P.O.W.E.R. value focus is Respect. We are encouraging students to think about what respect looks like in their everyday actions: listening when others speak, using kind words, caring for equipment and our school grounds, and including others in learning and play.
Respect also means recognising that people may have different ideas, strengths and needs. These everyday actions help make our school a place where everyone feels valued and ready to learn. Thank you for reinforcing these messages at home.
Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you for your continued support of our school.
Ngā mihi nui,
Pip Were
