Symes Bridge closure starts this Sunday nightSymes Bridge on State Highway 39 (SH39) will close to all traffic from 9pm this Sunday, 11 October, for up to 2 months while crews replace the bridge deck and beams.Symes Bridge, which crosses over the Moakurarua Stream, is approximately 16km north of Ōtorohanga. While the bridge is closed, the official detour route for traffic will be via State Highway 3 (SH3) through Te Awamutu.SH39 is a vital route through western Waikato and an important freight connection between Taranaki and Auckland. This upgrade will ensure the bridge remains safe, reliable and fit for the traffic that depends on it every day.Crews have been busy preparing for the closure. A scaffold platform has been installed beneath the bridge to provide safe access for demolition and construction work, while services attached to the bridge have been temporarily relocated so they can remain operational throughout the project. Crane pads have also been constructed for a 600-tonne mobile crane, which will lift out the existing bridge structure and install the new upgraded bridge.Closing the bridge to traffic is the safest and most efficient way of getting the deck and beams replaced. The upgraded bridge deck will be stronger and over one metre wider, improving its resilience and keeping people and freight moving safely along this important route.NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) thanks local communities, road users and freight operators for their patience while this important upgrade is completed.
